Let’s face it, many people like to show off on social media. Whether it’s sharing holiday snaps or pictures of a new car, society is awash with people who love to share what makes them proud with their followers.
Although this self-promotion can be a little annoying, especially if you haven’t been on holiday yourself for a while, most of us see it as harmless. After all, they’ve probably worked hard for it, so let them show off a little.
But what many people forget is you don't always know who’s watching what you post. And with potentially thousands of followers, some of them may have sinister intentions.
By posting sensitive information about your belongings or whereabouts online, you may be offering thieves or burglars the information they need to break into your home.
A former burglar has spoken to LadBible about the perils of social media and our over-eagerness to share where we are or what we’ve got. She said: “People don’t realise that your online life is connected to your physical property.
“Every time we go on holiday, we post about it on social media. You wouldn’t have a sign on your front door saying ‘this house is unoccupied’ but we do in the digital realm.
“Someone can very easily start putting patterns together or weaknesses together. And it’s just a case of making yourself a harder target than that. Don’t make yourself the easiest target in your area.”
With this in mind, the next time you go away, avoid posting pics until you’re back. In the vast majority of cases, burglars won't go near a home if it’s occupied, so sharing your holiday photos while you’re home makes all the sense in the world.
Security Measures
It’s unnerving to know that thieves or burglars could be watching our every move on social media. In some cases, it may be someone from school who went down a bad path. Blissfully unaware, we may be telling them where we live, when we’re away and what they can take without even realising.
If you’re concerned about your home being susceptible to thieves, a home security survey could provide peace of mind by making your home more secure.
Also known as security assessments or audits, our home security surveys are thorough examinations of a property’s security strengths and weaknesses.
They involve a qualified professional carrying out a systematic assessment of your home. The aim is to identify potential security risks and provide our recommendations on exactly how you can rectify them.
Home security surveys are beneficial in a number of ways. As well as being cost-effective and helping you avoid further costs in the long run, they can be customised to provide a bespoke package for your home.
Moreover, by addressing any potential breaches in your property’s security system, you can deter any would-be thieves, all of which helps you relax safe in the knowledge you and your family are safe.
So, if you’re looking to shore up the security of your home then speak to us today and we’ll discuss some options and get your home checked out.
