Christmas is just around the corner and homeowners in the areas of England and Wales most prone to break-ins have been warned to stay vigilant during the festive period.
Analysing police data that tracked property theft during November and December over the last three years, insurance company Howden identified the parts of the country where you’re most likely to be burgled.
The company found that the region you’re most likely to have a break-in is South Yorkshire, with a concerning 148 burglaries per 100,000 people - or one in every 675.
At the opposite end of the scale, Norfork was the area where you’re least likely to be burgled, with significantly fewer 37 out of every 100,000 people reporting their homes were broken into.
During the festive period, thieves are particularly active as they’re aware families tend to have expensive gifts lying around that can be easily scooped up.
A spokesperson for Howden Insurance commented on the findings, highlighting the need to keep yourself protected this Christmas.
"With the Christmas shopping season in full swing throughout November and December, it is important to ensure that gifts are kept out of sight in your home, as they can serve as an enticing invitation to criminal onlookers.
"Combine this with the increased likelihood of homes being temporarily vacant as people visit family and friends over the Christmas period, and you create the ideal conditions for opportunistic thieves.
"Beyond the financial aspect, the emotional impact of having your gifts stolen is considerable and can result in stress and disappointment during what should otherwise be a joyous time. By taking proactive measures to secure their property, homeowners can reduce the risk of break-ins during these risker winter months."
Security Measures
Regardless of where you’re living, this data highlights the need to keep your home protected, not just at Christmas but all year round.
If you’re concerned about your home being susceptible to thieves, a home security survey could help put your mind at ease and make your home more secure.
Also known as security assessments or audits, home security surveys are systematic examinations of your property’s security strengths and vulnerabilities.
They involve a qualified professional carrying out a meticulous assessment of your home which aims to identify potential security risks and offer recommendations on how to address them.
Home security surveys provide a range of benefits. As well as being cost-effective and helping you avoid unnecessary costs, they can be customised to suit your home’s precise needs.
Furthermore, by addressing potential breaches in your home’s security system, you can deter would-be thieves, all of which provides peace of mind as you know you and your family are better-protected against break-ins.
